In it’s first offering, Caputo Excavating rebuilt a driveway for a Meridale couple, and Hayes said he and Sabrina want to repeat the giveaway.
The story begins a few years back, with a woman and her teenaged son living a few miles from Caputo Excavating in South Kortright.
While the woman and her son were healthy, they were struggling financially to make ends meet. One day, completely unexpectedly, the son had a seizure. Ambulance, fire and medical personnel couldn’t get to the house because the driveway was too narrow and unsafe. By the time they were able to access the boy, the damage had been done. The young man was severely disabled suffering severe brain damage.
Together with the support from other area businesses, they replaced the woman’s driveway. But after the tragedy, Ray Hayes and partner Sabrina Caputo decided that would never happen again.
“Emergency vehicles must be able to drive on them safely.”
There were similar situations which occurred at different locations, which prompted Ray Hayes and Sabrina Caputo of Caputo Excavating to vow to make a difference. They decided to offer a driveway free of charge to an elderly or disabled resident. “The goal is to help someone who may have a driveway that is inaccessible to medical transport or emergency vehicles.” said Hayes.
